Nano-Inspired Biosensors as Sustainable Approach in Agri-Food Sector

Abstract

Nanotechnology has the potential to revolutionize agriculture by improving input efficiency, minimizing losses, and promoting sustainable practices. Nano biosensors can detect plant stresses early, while nano-formulations can enhance agrochemical efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Smart farming using nano biosensors can optimize resource usage and boost crop protection and production. However, successful implementation requires education and field trials. Nano-inspired biosensors are emerging as a sustainable solution in the agri-food sector, addressing the need for efficient monitoring and control of food safety and quality. These advanced sensors use nanotechnology to enhance sensitivity and specificity in detecting biological and chemical substances, ensuring the integrity of food products. By integrating nanomaterials with biological recognition elements, these biosensors provide real-time monitoring of pathogens, pesticide residues, and nutrient levels in crops, enabling timely interventions. Nano-inspired biosensors can reduce waste, minimize harmful chemicals use, and lower the carbon footprint of agricultural practices. By providing precise data on soil health and crop conditions, farmers can optimize inputs, leading to more sustainable farming practices. The portability and cost-effectiveness of these biosensors make them accessible to small-scale farmers, promoting inclusivity in agricultural innovation. As the agri-food sector faces challenges related to food security and environmental degradation, nano-inspired biosensors present a promising avenue for achieving sustainability while enhancing productivity and safety in food production.
