Phytochemical Analysis and Antioxidant Efficacy of Eleven Medicinal Plants from Kandi Belt of Jammu Region

Abstract

The current investigation was conducted to evaluate the phytochemical composition and antioxidant efficiency of eleven medicinal plants from kandi belt of Jammu region, viz., Adhatoda vasica (brankar), Artocarpus heterophyllus (katahal), Azadirachta indica (neem), Calotropis procera (aak), Cordia dichotoma (lasoda), Emblica officinalis (amla), Murraya koenigii, (curry patta) Syzygium cumini (jamun), Tinospora cordifolia (giloye), Terminalia chebula (harad) and Zanthoxylum armatum (timru). Methanolic extracts of the above mentioned plants were prepared and used as test material. Phytochemical analysis was performed by folin-ciocalteau method and aluminum chloride colorimetric assay whereas antioxidant potential was determined via three different assays namely DPPH radical scavenging, ferric reducing antioxidant power and metal ion chelation. The results revealed that Tinospora cordifolia showed maximum phenolics, flavonoid content and displayed highest antioxidant potential and can be explored further for biomedical potential to identify active compounds.
