Abstract

The aim of the present investigation is to study the corrosion properties of zircon particulate reinforced aluminium 6061 metal matrix composites by open circuit potential method. The composites were prepared by liquid melt metallurgy technique using vortex method. Composites containing 3, 5 and 7% zircon are prepared. Specimens were designed according to ASTM standards. The corrodents used for the tests were 1M, 0.5M and 0.25M hydrochloric acid solution. In each case the potential decreases with increase in exposure time and becomes constant due to passivation induced by aluminium for matrix and metal matrix composites.
