Abstract

The electrochemical reduction of various carbonyl compounds was carried out at the Constant Potential in non-aqueous solvent by using weak acid at Stainless Steel electrode for the preparation of Pinacol. The effect of the various parameters viz. reagents, temperature and pH on the reaction rate was observed and it was found that the percentage yield of Pinacol was maximum in neutral medium at room temperature with 4-chlorobenzaldehyde as reactant. Product is confirmed by spectral and chemical analysis.
