Abstract

An unidentified fungus was isolated from the leaves of Saccharum officinarum; commonly called sugar cane. The fungus was cultured in aqueous 3% malt extract enriched with 6% glucose for 8 weeks. Ethyl acetate extract of 250 ml culture medium yielded a creamy solid. Speectroscopic methods were used to identify the substance as 5-hydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)-4-pyrone (kojic acid).
