A series of 2-substituted-4, 5-diphenyl imidazoles were synthesized by refluxing benzil with different substituted aromatic aldehyde in the presence of ammonium acetate and glacial acetic acid. The structures of the synthesized compounds were confirmed on the basis of IR and 1H-NMR spectral data. The synthesized compounds (Z1–8) were screened for antimicrobial activity separately in vitro by Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Among the entire test compounds Z2 and Z8 have shown promising activity than the rest against fungal and bacterial strains compared to the standard drugs, Ciprofloxacin and Clotrimazole.
