Synthesis and characterization of some novel dioxo-molybdenum (VI) complexes having the general formula cis-[MoO2(L)(solv)] (where LH2=Schiff base derived from o-hydroxyacetophenone(hap), o-hydroxypropiophenone(hpp) and o- hydroxybenzophenone (hbp) and nicotinic acid hydrazide (NAH) and solv=ethanol) are reported. The various Schiff base ligands prepared by the condensation of nicotinic acid hydrazide and substituted salicylaldehyde are N'[(1Z)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethylidene]nicotinohydrazide (H2hap-NAH)(1a), N'[(1Z)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)propylidene]nicotinohydrazide (H2hpp-NAH)(2a) and N'[(1Z)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)phenylethylidene]nicotinohydrazide (H2hbp-NAH) (3a). The cis-[MoO2(L)(solv)] complexes synthesized by reacting cis[MoO2(acac)2] and the ligands (1a–3a) in ethanol are cis-[MoO2(hapNAH)(EtOH)](1b), cis-[MoO2(hpp-NAH)(EtOH)] (2b) and cis-[MoO2(hbpNAH)(EtOH)](3b).These Schiff base ligands and their MoO2 complexes are characterized by elemental analysis, IR, NMR, UV-Vis and conductivity measurements. The complexes are found to be monomers, non-electrolytes, diamagnetic and six coordinated, the sixth position being occupied by the solvent i.e.,ethanol. The spectral studies suggest that the Schiff base ligands behave as dibasic tridentate ligands and coordinate through phenolic oxygen, azomethine nitrogen and enolic oxygen atoms.
