Abstract

Fieldwork practice is a foundational pedagogical element in development extension education, providingstudents with immersive exposure to community settings, enabling them to translate theory into practice. Documentation and report writing are not merely administrative obligations; they function as critical tools that promote reflective learning, continuous improvement, and professional competence. This study explores the impact of report writing and documentation on the professional development of Master’s in Development Extension (MDEx) students during fieldwork. It investigates four domains: (a) enhancement of critical thinking, (b) development of professional competence, (c) influence on self-efficacy, and (d) best documentation practices. Employing a descriptive quantitative design, the research surveyed 100 MDEx students across different institutions in India using structured questionnaires, with data analysed via SPSS.

Results show that structured report writing significantly bolsters students’ ability to reflect on field experiences, connect theoretical frameworks to contextual realities, and recognise barriers in community innovation uptake. These findings align with recent research in educational settings on the importance of goal clarity and scaffolded writing practice, as well as the need to support learners through online writing models.
