Poultry production (chicken as broiler and layer) has become industrialised in West Bengal. However, in the villages poultry is reared in the backyard and courtyard with almost zero external input. But unlike commercial production, backyard production of poultry serves many functions which are of kind types. On the other hand, poultry industry has brought the curse of bird flu in the society. A comprehensive and integrated policy is required to improve poultry in West Bengal based on the principle of cooperative and self-help.
