Abstract

Mineral associations, in clay fractions of three Barind (Amnura, Lauta and Nijhuri soil series) and three Madhupur (Gerua, Chandra and Kalma soil series) soils have been identified and quantified by X-ray diffraction supplemented by chemical analysis. Kaolinite was the dominant mineral in both Barind and Madhupur Tract soils. The nature and quantity of other associated clay minerals were found to vary considerably from sample to sample. Mica, montmorillonite, and vermiculite were identified in these samples. Influence of these samples on some agricultural properties of the soils is also indicated.
