Abstract

A study was carried out to determine the area, production and productivity of papaya in Raipur district and Chhattisgarh state. The area of papaya increased from 17 hectares in 2000–01 to 1480 hectares in 2007–08 sowing a tremendous increase in the area. Actually the good growth in area of this crop may be observed only after 2003–04. The production of papaya varied from about 575 tonnes to about 66600 tonnes during this 8 years period. The productivity of this crop remained below 7092 tonnes during most of the period except very few years. The productivity of this crop is estimated 36117 kg and 40886 kg during 2001–2004 periods while during remaining period it was less than 35000 tonnes. The area under cultivation of this crop increased from 51hectares in 2000–01 to 7409 hectares in 2007–2008. These figures show that the area under this crop increased in the state during this period. It also shows that the process of diversification is continue in the state and farmers are taking papaya crop in place of other fruits on their upland.
