Abstract

Between the application of a potential difference sufficient to cause the starting of an electric discharge in insulating gas and effective starting, it runs out a certain time “time lag”. On the basis of analysis of this time for a wave of voltage given, we are going in to show this article that it is possible to identify the origin of the sources of initiating electrons of the electric discharge by determining the rates of their productions. In a system of electrodes plane its rates point primarily depend on a certain volume “critical volume” that we defined for the two polarities of the active electrode.

The shape of the electrode, the value of the electric field of ionizing and the density of gas are the most influential parameters on the limits of this volume. Any time, the conditioning of gas, the enclosure and the electrodes is determining for obtaining reliable and reproducible results. With the courses of the preliminary tests, we noted that the phenomenon of conditioning is primarily related to the evolution of the state of the electrodes in low pressure and to the state of gases in high pressure [1],[2]
