The refrigeration and air-conditioning markets are dominated by vapour compression based refrigeration systems that use synthetic refrigerants. With the increasing interest of environmental protection, a great deal of attention has been put in this area. There are a number of alternative eco-friendly refrigerants that have been proposed for use in refrigeration systems. Refrigerants play an important role in accessing the technical and economic feasibility of these green refrigerators. A computer model has been developed for actual system simulation, with double pipe evaporator and condenser. The procedure for this simulation analysis and its validation for a vapour compression refrigeration system is envisaged in this paper. The refrigerant thermodynamic and transport properties and the physical details of the system are the main inputs to this model. This model was validated with the actual system performance using refrigerant R12. It also simulated the performance with the refrigerant R125, for the same system. The input evaporator capacity was compared with the actual heat transfer and was set within the tolerance limit. The available correlations with least deviations were considered for determining the actual heat transfer for the evaporator and condenser. The simulated performance deviation was within reasonable limit. By this in general, the performance and hence its suitability of an eco-friendly refrigerant for vapour compression refrigeration system can be assessed, before going in for detailed actual experimental investigation.
