Abstract

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is the main standard of the third generation mobile communications and Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) is its air interface. Multiple Access Interference (MAI) degrades the system performance in WCDMA system. This paper discusses the effect of multiple access interference on the uplink performance of a WCDMA system. The measure of performance is the Bit Error Rate for different number of users. The Average Bit Error Rate is computed by taking the sum of symbols that are transmitted with error to the sum of symbols that are transmitted. The simulation results show that the system performance is considerably degraded when there is an increase in the number of users. The channel effect on the quality of signal is a problem in transmission that should be considered. Therefore the performance of the system for both indoor and outdoor channels has been examined. The perfect power control is assumed and the WCDMA with FDD mode has been chosen for the operation mode of transmission.
