Compression ignition engines play a dominant role in transportation and agricultural sectors because of their superior thermal efficiency and durability characteristics. The major portion of diesel is consumed by these sectors only. This situation has simulated active research in non-petroleum and low emission fuels. It is highly sought to develop alternative fuels in particular of renewable kind. In this study, different kinds of methyl ester of vegetable oils were derived by transesterification process, and experimental investigations have been carried out to compare properties, performance, combustion and emission characteristics. Eleven different methyl esters of biofuels at a blend ratio of 20/80 with diesel and also neat diesel were tested in a standard, fully instrumented diesel engine. A series of tests were conducted at rated speed of 1500 rpm using each of the above fuel blends. It is observed that methyl ester of thevetia peruviana seed oil has better engine performance with less emission compared to other blends.
