Presently, electronics, textile and biomedical fields are using low pressure glow discharge plasmas or wet chemicals for surface processing. But, low pressure glow discharge processing is very costly due to the requirement of vacuum system. The use of vacuum process increases the cost of the system and decreases the productivity and is therefore a burden for the textile industry. Moreover, wet processing is environmentally non-preferable due to large amount of chemical requirements. Therefore, surface treatments using eco-friendly atmospheric pressure plasma have an obvious advantage over low-pressure glow discharge and are in pressing demand. Due to their potential benefits, various atmospheric cold plasma schemes are currently under investigation for application to surface processing. Among various atmospheric plasmas, Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) technology plays a significant role in surface treatment.
In this paper, atmospheric barrier discharge reactor for surface treatment has been presented. Moreover, process parameters and major components of DBD reactor have been discussed.
