Abstract

The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate the feasibility of Methyl ester of jatropha oil for diesel fuel substitution in a naturally aspirated D.I. diesel engine. In the experiment, the performance, combustion and emission characteristics of methyl esters of jatropha oil (MEJ) and its blends with diesel from 25% to 100% by volume were measured in a D.I. diesel engine.

Engine test has been carried out with the aim of obtaining the comparative measures of combustion and performance parameters such as ignition delay, rate of heat release, cumulative heat release, peak flame temperature,pressure, efficiency, specific energy consumption and emission characteristics such as NOx and smoke for diesel and for various blends of MEJ.

In the final analysis it was found that, the blends of methyl ester of jatropha oil (MEJ) generated an acceptable engine performance, exhaust gas emissions and combustion characteristics and are a viable substitute for diesel engines.

To obtain clear results, the investigation was carried out with a naturally aspirated D.I. diesel engine, which is more sensitive to fuel properties than I.D.I or turbo charged engines.
