Abstract

South Gujarat region of state of Gujarat in India has alluvium deposits at great depth and extent. The coastal belt of South Gujarat has tremendous potential growth. It is a common practice to investigate the subsoil even for low rise structure by conventional method of making borehole of 150 mm diameter and to collect the samples in disturbed and undisturbed conditions. The samples are tested in the laboratory for characterization of strata and engineering properties of soil. A laboratory consolidation test takes a considerable amount of time, labour and computation. In many cases reliability is poor due to sampling disturbances. In this paper soil index and plasticity characteristics of different parts of the South Gujarat region are studied. Various empirical correlations for predicting compressibility parameters are develop using detail statistical analysis of soil index and plasticity characteristics of soil. It is found that soil empirical correlations using liquid limit and plasticity index are giving reasonably good correlation coefficient in compare to other soil index properties. In this paper detail statistical analysis of and index and consolidation properties of alluvial deposits of South Gujarat region of Gujarat State in India are shown. This statistical analysis was carried out in order to obtain most suitable and practically applicable relationships.
