Abstract

The design of an improved efficiency segment-stator induction motor is detailed in the present paper. In seeking the best design approach, different types of rotor windings were theoretically analyzed. Procedures and techniques for improving efficiency and torque-speed characteristics were extensively investigated. In the work presented, a series of laboratory tests were carried out on a specially-built test rig using various types of rotor windings. The paper provides the results of the theoretical and experimental investigations, with emphasis on the most important factors that influence the design of the motor and its performance, such as edge effect phenomenon, losses, and efficiency. The paper also describes an on site testing of the designed system in a gearless drive for a raw cotton module-builder.
