Abstract

The radiative heat flux received by vegetation is a leading process of the propagation of forest fires. This flux is a function of the flame height and of the absorption coefficient for radiation. We have measured these quantities during experiments of fire using Quercus coccifera as vegetal medium. The variation of the values of the absorption coefficient as a function of the load (surface density of vegetation) has been studied. As the absorption coefficient is proportional to the load; we have determined the proportionality coefficient, of course it depends upon the nature of the vegetation.
