Accurate detection of R-peaks plays a vital role in diagnosing heart related diseases. A new algorithm for better detection of R-peaks from ECG signal using sub band coding and consequent characterization of Cardiac abnormalities is presented in this paper. An accuracy of 98%, better than other methods already suggested, has been observed. The ECG signal is obtained using the sensing device with 10 probes. An alternate technique to compute the heart rate is also described.
