Effects of Temperature on Tensile Strength of Kevlar Reinforced Composite Materials

Abstract

The effect of temperature under atmospheric environments at temperature of 20°C, 100°C, 200°C for a period varying from 2 to 32 hours has been applied to Kevlar fiber. Mechanical properties, e.g. tensile strength, tensile strain of the Kevlar strand have been evaluated. At -20°C, it was found that both of tensile strength and tensile strain was not different from its property at the initial state. However, at 100°C and 200°C tensile strength and tensile strain decreased when the temperature increased. When applying a constant temperature, the experiment showed that temperature has slightly effect on both tensile strength and tensile strain.
