Fusion zone shape and final surface quality of SUS301L stainless steel with overlap joint were evaluated as a function of laser welding parameters. The overlap weld joints were made using a YAG disk laser with a maximum output of 4 kW in the continuous wave mode. The laser welding parameter combinations including the laser power, welding speed, and defocusing distance should be carefully selected so that the overlap joints with no welded traces on the outside surface and higher tensile strength than that of resistance spot welding are produced. The fusion zone is symmetrical about the axis of the laser beam. No welding cracks or porosity were found in any of the welds.
