In this communication, an attempt has been made to find out the effect of water capacity on the performance of a simple solar still. It is a well known fact that the distillate output decreases significantly with the increase in water depth of the solar still. A solar still with single-slope single basin type is fabricated with an effective area of 0.5 m2, the glass cover is mounted on the still at an inclination of 10° to the horizontal plane. In this experimental study, the experiments have been conducted for 24 hours during summer for different water levels (0.01m – 0.06m) in the basin. The hourly amount of distilled water, the various temperatures and the insolation were monitored for a period of three months (March – May 2008). The various objectives of this present study is, to study the effect of saline water capacity in the basin on the internal and external heat transfers and also on the performance of the single slope single basin solar still.
