Abstract

Methyl or Ethyl esters of vegetable oils are the alternative fuels for the petroleum diesel, because of their properties are very nearer to the petroleum diesel. But the flash point and auto-ignition temperatures are very high. Compression ratio is one of the parameter which governs atomization and vaporization of fuel. In this work the single cylinder diesel engine was tested at different compression ratios i.e. 15.5:1, 16.5:1, 17.5:1, 18.5:1, 19:1 with cotton seed methyl Ester without modifications at different loads. On increasing of compression ratio closeness of fuel molecules increases and caused for better combustion. On the other hand when the compression ratio increases the back flow of the air in the suction stroke will causes for reduction of intake air. It leads to increase of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in the exhaust gas. But cotton seed methyl ester having inbuilt oxygen and this oxygen influencing the combustion. At the same time the thermal efficiency should be high and pollutants should be low. The performance, p-θ, and emissions results supports that, for cotton seed methyl Ester 18.5:1 compression ratio is preferable.
