Resistance of Standard Grade Self Compacting Concrete and Normal Concrete to Acid Attack

Abstract

The objectives of the work described in this paper were aimed at comparing the relative performance of Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) with that of conventional Normal Concrete (NC) to acid attack. In this study the effect of 2% and 5% solutions of sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid was investigated. Tests were carried out at 20°C for a period of 3 days, 7 days and 28 days in both hydrochloric and sulphuric acid solutions. SCC is made with 52% of flyash in total powder. In the study Acid Durability Factor (ADF) has been derived in terms of relative strength of both SCC and NC. Acid Attacking Factor (AAF) is also calculated for both SCC and NC in terms of average loss on corners of the concrete cube. From this study it has been observed that Acid Durability Factor (ADF) for Self Compacting Concrete is less compared with conventionally vibrated concrete in 2% and 5% solutions of both sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid. Acid Attacking Factor (AAF) is less for SCC compared with NC in 2% and 5% solutions of sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid. Weight loss is more in normal concrete compared to SCC. It has been concluded that SCC could withstand acid attack more effectively than NC.
