Abstract

Sheet metal forming is a significant manufacturing process for producing a large variety of automotive, aerospace and consumer products. Deep drawing is a compression-tension forming process involving wide spectrum of operations and flow conditions. The results of the process depend on the large number of parameters and their interdependence. With the developments in the technology the design of deep drawing is an art than science still today and selection of various parameters is still based on trial and error methods.

The aim of this paper is development an analytical model for the cup drawing process to solve for the induced stresses and strains over the deforming sheet at any stage of deformation until a cup is formed. An analytical model is developed for the cup drawing process by determining the variation of stresses and strains over the deforming sheet. The model uses analytical procedure to solve equilibrium, continuity, and plasticity equations. The results of modeling showed good correlation with experimental results. Also, the analytical model was found to be useful in conducting parametric studies in order to determine how the different process parameters can affect the deforming cup.
