Abstract

A semi-empirical model has been proposed for the prediction of oxides of nitrogen of diesel-biodiesel blends. The Jatropha oil was used as biodiesel along with conventional diesel in the experimentation. The basic model was developed using dimensional analysis, co-efficients and power indices were evaluated from experimental results using multiple regression analysis using advanced software like statistica. The engine performance and emission characteristics of diesel, Jatropha oil and their blends like D80/B20, D70/B30 and D50/B50 were evaluated. The fuels and their blends were tested at 1200 rpm, 1600 rpm at 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% loads. It has been observed that the NOX model provides excellent results at higher loads for every blend tested. Maximum variation in measured value of NOX and calculated value of NOX was observed at 20% load using D80/B20 at 1200 rpm and minimum variation was observed at 60% load using D50/B50 at 1600 rpm.
