Preliminary studies of sand deposits from Konark–Ramchandi beach as well as dunes reveal that they contain 7.7% of Total Heavy Minerals (THM) but particle size distribution of beach sand is marginally higher than the dune sand samples. Methods for recovery of heavy minerals include spiral, magnetic and electrostatic separation followed by gravity separation of non-magnetic and non-conducting fractions. These studies reveals that the conducting fraction obtained contains 98% ilmenite and the gravity table concentrate obtained contains 95% sillimanite and 5% zircon. The over all recoveries can be improved by reprocessing the middlings.
