Optimizing the Power Output of Air Bottoming Cycle

Abstract

The gas turbine engine has low capital cost compared with the steam power plants. It has environmental advantage and short construction lead-time. One of the technologies adopted now a day for improvement in the utilization of energy is combined cycles power plant. The Air Bottoming Cycle (ABC) can replace the heat recovery steam generator and the steam turbine of the conventional combined cycle plant. The exhaust of the topping gas turbine of existing combine cycle is sent to gas-air heat exchange, which heats the air in the secondary gas turbine cycle. ABC was proposed in late 1980's as an alternative for the conventional steam bottoming cycle. Besides the cost of reducing of hardware installations it could achieve a thermal efficiency of 60%. The thermodynamic analysis of the system has been performed using specially designed programmes, enabling the variation of main independent variables. The result shows the gain in 15% to 35% efficiency.
