Abstract

The cement industry has been searching for alternative fuels because of its high-energy costs involved in production. Many years of experience in several industries have shown that the use of wastes as alternative fuels in cement plants is both ecologically and economically justified. Energy costs and environmental standards encouraged cement manufacturers world-wide to evaluate to what extent conventional fuels can be replaced by alternative fuels. However, there are several factors that need assessment before using alternative fuels. Further, availability and cost are important factors too. Along with other alternative fuels, literature and case studies have revealed that use of tyre derived fuels in cement kiln is technically and economically viable option producing 25% more energy than coal in cement kiln and it can also result in lower emissions. Therefore, use of waste tyres in cement kilns to the possible extent is suggested in this study.
