Abstract

The increased use of the diesel engine in the passenger car, truck, bus market and stationary application is due to high efficiency and lower fuel costs. This growing market share has brought with it several environmental issues for instance soot particle emission. Different technologies to remove the soot have been developed and are normally based on some kind of soot filter. In particular, diesel particulate filters (DPFs) are becoming a standard. To properly design DPF systems, space velocity plays a very important role in deciding size of diesel particulate filter. An experimental study has been carried out on a displacement 950cc diesel engine equipped with diesel particulate filter and compared effect of low space velocity on the performance of diesel particulate filter in terms of smoke density, filtration efficiency, brake specific fuel consumption, pressure drop across dpf and brake thermal efficiency.
