Abstract

Drilling is a hole making process, it is traditionally preformed by a drill having two cutting edges. Due to restricted machining the chip flow is difficult in drilling. Further due to vibrations the quality of surface finish in drilling is not acceptable for precision applications, hence normally drilling is followed up by reaming. This is a two-step process, an attempt is made in the present work to improve the quality of finish by designing a new twist drill with three cutting edges. The new drill designed improved the quality of surface finish and the chip evacuation is expedited. Tests are conducted using the experimental drill of size 12mm, and the results are compared with normal drilling.
