Microalgal decolorization of textile dyes

Abstract

The decolorization of textile dyes by algae isolated from the site of effluent discharge was studied. Four isolated species of algae (Chlorella sp., Anabaena sp.I, Anabaena sp.II and Nostoc sp.) were grown in N-starvation condition in BG-11 liquid medium containing textile dyes @ 10 mg L−1 and the reduction in color of medium was determined by measuring the absorbance of supernatant at wavelength maxima (λm) of respective dye. Anabaena sp. II was found to be efficient in decolorizing of textile dyes. Effect of textile dyes on the production of cellular metabolites by Anabaena sp. II was also determined.
