With rapid industrialization and urbanization, per capita municipal solid waste generation has increased considerably. Municipal solid waste generation data for last two decades shows an alarming increase in developing countries, like India. Owing to its improper and untimely collection, the transport and disposal of municipal solid waste poses a severe threat to various components of the environment and also to public health. Most of the municipal solid waste is dumped in non-regulated landfills and the generated methane, which is emitted to the atmosphere. This paper describes the profit of landfill disposal system of municipal solid waste management with the utilization of landfill gas recovery which helps to reduce the methane emission. It is the most widely employed and regarded as the most suitable and simple mechanism, especially for tropical countries such as India, is emphasized.
