Studies on Organochlorine Pesticide Residues in Hindon River Surface Water of Ghaziabad

Abstract

Organochlorine compounds can be persistent environmental contaminants and may be accumulated through the food chain to the aquatic organisms to fish and humans, depending basically on their hydrophobic properties.

Liquid-Liquid extraction followed by GC-ECD, was used for the determination to these compound among the various pesticides of α-,β-,γ-, HCH, analyzed in Karhera drain high concentration of α- HCH of were detected in the surface water collected from Karhera drain(26.8μg/l), Mixing point(18.2μg/l) & D/S of out fall Karhera drain(12μg/l). β- HCH of were detected in the surface water collected from Karhera drain(23μg/l), Mixing point(17.7μg/l) & D/S of out fall Karhera drain(10.7μg/l). γ- HCH of were detected in the surface water collected from Karhera drain(22.8μg/l), Mixing point(17.2μg/l) & D/S of out fall Karhera drain(10μg/l).The concentration of α-, β-, -, HCH was found to be much higher than the EC water quality standards in the water samples from sampling location posing a high risk to the common people.
