Abstract

The pollution potential of partially treated Tannery effluent on ground water pollution is assessed. The major parts of our country is facing man made ground water pollution such type of pollution are mainly due to untreated Industrial effluent discharge on the open canal cause stringent ground water pollution in the industrial belt. This develops a problem of pollution free drinking water in the Industrial surrounding area. More than 50% of Tanning Industries in the country is exist in Tamil Nadu. There are about 11 Tannery operating in this area of Thiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu. The partially treated effluent from these Tanneries has considerably affected the quality of ground water. In order to assess the extend of ground water deterioration. The analyses of variance (ANOVA) for water quality parameters of samples from various sources of chosen villages are studied. Among the parameters tested, the levels of Total Alkalinity(TA), Total Hardness (TH), Cl and Total Dissolved Salts(TDS) are highly varying. The variation with respect to the parameters like pH, Nephelo Turbidity Unit (NTU),Dissolve Oxygen (DO), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) are insignificant. From the generated data, it can be concluded that the ground water pollution in this area has deteriorated mainly due to discharge of partially treated effluent.
