Abstract

Agri-silviculture model involving four-year-old poplar (Populus deltoides) and ten turmeric varieties (Curcuma longa L.) was evaluated for the growth and yield parameters. Tree growth, yield of turmeric, soil organic carbon and nutrient status of agroforestry systems were assessed. All the turmeric varieties yielded higher under open condition as compared to the yield under poplar plantation. The variety SD-3 recorded highest yield under poplar plantation as well as in open. Variety PH-24 recorded the second highest processed yield which was at par with both check varieties (PH-1 and PH-2), PH-42 and KMC-12. Average increase of 5.73% in the curcumin content was recorded in turmeric when grown under poplar as compared to turmeric grown in open. Highest curcumin yield was recorded in the variety PH-42 while the minimum in SD-3. The selection of appropriate turmeric variety based on the objective of commercial plantation is essential for the success of agroforestry system.
