Allelopathic effects of tree species on germination and seedling growth of traditional agricultural crops of Garhwal Himalayas

Abstract

The present study was aimed to determine the allelopathic effect of aqueous extracts (control, 2%, 4% and 6%) of leaf and bark of important agroforestry tree species, namely Zanthoxylum armatum, Ougeinia oojeinensis and Boehmeria rugulosa on germination and seedling growth characteristics of traditional agricultural crops, namely Eleusine coracana, Echinochloa frumentacea, Vigna umbellata and Vigna angularis. The aqueous extracts of leaf and bark of selected tree species exhibited maximum germination at 2% concentration, whereas minimum was recorded at 6% concentration. The inhibition effect of B. rugulosa was found to be maximum, followed by O. oojeinensis and Z. armatum.
