Influence of Selenite and Selenomethionine Administration on Serum Transaminases and Haematology of Goats

Abstract

Changes in blood serum (G OT) Aspartate transaminase (EC. 2.6.1.1) and (GPT) Alanine transaminase (EC. 2.6.1.2) values and haematological picture was studied in 12 crossbred (SAB) bucks, divided into 2 equal groups, eachgiven progressively increasing systemic selenium load in the form of selenite and selenomethionine, respectively, on equalised Se dose basis. While haematological picture consisting of haemoglobin, % packed cell volume %, erythrocytic sedimentation rate and cellular RBC and WBC counts showed no change, both the transaminases registered sharp increase in activity beyond the dose level of 0.15-0.20 mg Se/kg body wt. The rise in enzymic activity of both the transaminases was more pronounced in the selenite group. The findings suggested that systemic Se load, as in selenium toxicity, caused liver damage without any apparent disturbance in haemopiotic system. It was also evident that different chemical forms of selenium at equalised Se dose levels caused different degrees of liver damage.
