Experiment was conducted with wheat straw and unchaffed rice straw to trap the escaping ammonia from stacks of urea treated straw (TS) in untreated straw (US) packed in horizontal and vertical directions in different proportions. The N-recovery increased with increasing proportions of untreated straw in the stuck, but the maximum increase in digestible DM yield was observed when the untreated straw constituted about 15% on either side of the rectangular stack (about 50% of the total straw mass) or 40 cm peripheral radius of the circular stack of 1.75 m radius (approx 40% of the total straw mass). The placement of untreated straw in layer above the treated straw was much less effective than its placement on thesides or periphery of the stack. The placement of untreated straw on the sides or periphery of the stack also showed an increase in the yield of DDM per unit weight of urea used.
