Abstract

Thirty two Avivastra hoggets (22.66 kg) were divided into 4 groups of 8 each. Three groups were grazed on developed silvipastures whereas the 4th group was maintained on routine free range grazing management with concentrate supplementation at the rate of 200g/animal/day. The aggregated biomass available (kg DM/ha) on 3 tier (T1), 2 tier (T2) and 1 tier (T3) silvipastoral plot were 2772.2, 2819.1 and 2680.0, respectively. The intakes of DM (g/kgBW), DCP (g/kgBW) and DE (Kcal/kg BW) were 36.52,3.01 and 75.64 in T; 40.60 2.28 and 96.89 in T2 and 36.62,1.11 and 89.11 in T3, respectively. The gain in body weight (kg) of hoggets were similar in three groups under silvipasture but in comparision to free range group it was significantly higher (P<0.05). This also depicts better cost: benefit ratio It is thus concluded that desirable bodv weight in hoggets for breeding purpose at early age could be achieved under silvipastoral system of grazing management and it was cheaper to raise rams on developed pasture than on grazing + supplementation of 200 g concentrate.
