Abstract

Sorghum stover in bulk was treated with 4% urea, 40% moistureand stored for 14 d. Two experiments were conducted to study nutrient uttlization and milk production performance. In expt. I, six Surtldry Cemale buffaloes wererandomly divided into 2 groups of 3 animals each and were fed either untreated (T1) or urea treated sorghum stover (T2) to study nutrient utilization. The DMI was increased by 19% due to urea treatment. The digestibility coefficient of DM, OM, CP and CF were significantly higher (P < 0.01) in T2 than for T1. The TDN content was increased by 6% due to urea treatment. In expt II, 6 Murrah milch buffaloes (2nd parity, early lactation) were randomly divided into 2 groups of 3 animals each and were fed ration containing untreated (T3) and urea treated sorghum stover (T4). A significant increase (P<0.01) in milk yield was noticed (from 5.50 to 5.96 kg/day/animal) in T4 over T3. The cost of urea treatment was Rs. 0.13 p/kg of sorghum stover and feeding cost of animals was reduced by Rs. 0.45/Kg of milk.
