Abstract

Dietary supplementations (5.8x10’ cells/kg feed) of four strains of Saccha-romyces cerevisiae in the diet of ‘Starbro* broilers showed significantly (P<0.05) higher gain in live weight and higher feed efficiency ratio in Y3 strain (HPKV, Palampur) as compared to other treatments during the starter phase. Significantly (P<0.05) higher digestibility of ether-extract, cellulose and retention of nitrogen was also recorded on Y3 strain at the end of this phase. However, during the finisher phase (5 to 6 wks), the differences amongst different treatments became non-significant for different parameters. The overall growth data (2 to 6 wks) showed significantly (P<0.05) higher gains in live weight coupled with higher feed efficiency ratios in Y3 (HPKV, Palampur) and pigeon yeast (yeast strain isolation from thedroppings of pigeon) as compared to other treatments. The crop pH, and duodenal pH were lower and duodenal thickness was higher in Y3 treatment as compared to other treatments and control but the differences were statistically non-significant. The overall results showed that Y3 strain and yeast isolation from the droppings of pigeon were highly promising for supporting efficient broiler production.
