Comparative Study on Serum Levels of Calcium, Magnesium and Phosphorus in Cows with and Without Retention of Placenta

Abstract

Mean serum calcium level was 1.72±0.14,1.66±0.01 and 1.59±0.01 m mol/1 In cows with retained placenta one week before parturition, at the time of parturition and 12 hrs postpartum, respectively. Whereas, in cows without retained placenta, these values were 2.27±0.06, 2.15±0.04and 2.13±0.09 m mol/1, respectively. The mean serum magnesium level in cows with retained placenta one week before parturition, at the time of parturition and 12 hrs postpartum was 1.13±0,1.08±0 and 0.72±0 m mol/1, respectively. Whereas, in case of cows without retained placenta the magnesium values for the same period were 1.29±0,1.23±0. and 1.17±0 m mol/1, respectively. The mean serum phosphorus values in cows with and without retained placenta for the same period were 1.70±0,1.68±0 and 1.65±0 m mol/1 and 1.85±0,1.81±0. and 1.75±0 m mol/1, respectively. The cows with retained placenta bad significantly (P<0.05) lower levels of serum calcium, magnesium and phosphorus as compared to cows without retained placenta at each stage of sample collection. It was concluded that lower levels of serum calcium magnesium and phosphorus may be responsible for retention of placenta.
