Abstract

Ensiling of wilted (40% DM) lucerne (Medicago saliva L.) with and without Inoculation of lactic acid bacteria (Streptococcus saecalis snd dactobacillus plantarum) and molasses (5%), decreased DM content and pH. Bacterial lnoculation with molasses decreased the pH of silages more than molasses addition only. Bacterial inoculation Increased significantly ammonical nitrogen and lactic acid and decreased butyric acid contents without affecting acetic acid content. Total bacterial and lactic acid bacterial counts increased immediately after ensiling whereas anaerobic proteolytic bacteria and coltforms decreased. Molasses with inoculants resulted in a very good silage.
