Abstract

Eight Holstein x Haryasra crossbred bulls (275 kg, 2½ yrs) were fasted in a thermoneutral environment. The mean values of daily oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production were 17.24 and 12.17 litres per kg W0.75 respectively; giving a mean respiratory quotient valiue of 0.71 ± 0.02. The fasting heat production (Kcal/KgW0.75/day) ranged from 78.58 to 84.30 with an average value of 80.81±0.66.
