Effect of Chromium on in vitro Mimosine Degradation and Rumen Parameters of Leucaena leucocephala in Cattle

Abstract

Leucaena leaf meal contained 29.3% CP, and 4.5% mimosine, on DM basis. There was no effect on mimosine degradation as a result of different levels of chromium addition (upto 100 ppm). Under the natural conditions, 88% of mimosine was degraded into 3,4-DHP indicating that active enzyme-mimosinase, responsible for its metabolism, which is secreted by the rumen microbes of Indian cattle. However, there was no significant effect of chromium on the various rumen parameters, viz. TVFA, molar proportion of individual volatile fatty acids, total nitrogen, microbial protein except ammonia nitrogen concentration. Thus, chromium has no chelating effect with mimosine.
