Ten crossbred calves (Tharparkar/Sahiwal x Holstein Freisian; 5–6 m age, 74–120 kg B.Wt) were divided into two equal groups. Group I was fed as per NRC requirements whereas group II was subjected to 50% feed restriction for 12 wks followed by one wk metabolism trial (Phase I). Thereafter, both the groups were fed as per NRC for another 12 wks after which, a metabolism trial of 7d was conducted (Phase II). The calves of groups I and II exhibited a growth rate of 449.80 and -237.60 g/d in Phase I and 443.40 and 697.20 g/d in Phase II. DM, CP and CF digestibilities were significantly higher in group II calves during restriction period. Inspite of better digestibility, nitrogen balance was less in group II as compared to group I (1.24 vs 28.11 g/d), due to less N intake. During phase II, DM and CF digestibilities were also higher in group H calves. The DM intake was also improved upon realimentation. N-balance was significantly improved in group II calves and was even higher (P<0.01) than group I (52.44 vs 37.36 g/d), whiih might be responsible for increased growth of these calves.
