Abstract

In order to quantify the storage losses of iodine three popular brands of iodised salt A, B and C (sealed packets), one each of crystalline (D) and crushed (E) non-iodized common salt (loose) and mineral mixture samples (F, G) were stored under laboratory conditions for a period of four months and iodine content was estimated after opening the sealed packets and unpacked samples initially and thereafter at monthly intervals. The loss of iodine after the four months of storage were 26.90,16.54 and 27.14 percent for iodized salt A, B and C, 20.24 and 33.92’ percent for crystalline and crushed non-iodized salts and 32.17 and 29.97 percent’ for the mineral mixture samples F and G, respectively. The loss of iodine was ‘, greater during the first two months than the later stage. In general, about 25 percent of iodine was lost upon storing the common salt and mineral mixture samples in a four month period.
